thousand_stars | EVENT: The Budehuc Ball

(( PART 2 has started! ))

The day of the ball is finally upon Budehuc, and there is a distinctive hum of excitement in the air at new life entering the quiet castle. The evening has just begun, and the weather is fantastically clear outside and still light. All day there has been the hustle and bustle of curious traders flocking to the castle to assess whether it is now a worthy trading place again, and there are many unfamiliar faces walking the castle grounds, exploring. Extensive preparations have been made, directed by none other than Sir Euram Barows himself!

“The ball will be an impressive display of the wealth, ingenuity and importance of the people of...what's this castle called again? Oh right, Budehuc. The theme: Bright new beginnings. Everything must be bright! Spread conversation pieces across the room; sculptures, art, a tapestry or two, that sort of thing. The oppressive grays of the stone need to be polished until they shine, or covered with more aesthetically pleasing tones. There must be a tablecloth, embroidered preferably, on every table and contrasting but matching drapes and flounces on the walls!”

These were the instructions given to the workers, and every detail, word for word, has been carried out… to the best of the workers’ abilities, anyway, because Euram’s vision is quite grandiose and Budehuc has hardly the materials available for such an event! The consequences of such instruction has resulted in Budehuc castle looking fairly colourful for a change, although the alterations appear to only be visible in well-traversed paths that lead to the ex-war room, which has now been transformed into a ballroom. The changes outside of the room include having moved any remaining sculptures and paintings still there from after the war to the front so that they can be seen.

Opening the door to the war room, however, is like opening the door to another world. It's an assault of color, all of it clashing quite horrendously. There are brightly colored tablecloths, rugs and flounces. If you look closer some of the flounces are in fact bed-sheets because they ran out of material due to the short time frame, and some of those bed-sheets appear to have been painted the appropriate color by the workers, probably to please Euram ~~and get him to shut up~~.

Still, there are finger foods, fine wine and tankards of ale spread upon the tables at the outer edges of the room and a small band tucked away in the corner playing live music for the dancing guests in the middle. Waiters and waitresses are constantly moving around to set items of food or drinks down and pick up glassware.

The room is relatively quiet right now, with people sure to be trickling in and out as the night goes on!

[ This is after his encounter with Mukumuku, so he looks a little disheveled. He looks at Jeremy when he speaks. ]

It's only reserved if you're going to cause a ruckus.

[Notices some changes about him.]

Did something happen to your shirt?

[ He figures he won't tell Jeremy the truth if he wasn't there to witness the event, defending Minen's honour a little. ]

Someone just spilled something on it, that's all. I had to go get changed.

[ He looks at Jeremy, slightly curious. ]

Did you ask Minen to dance with you?

Ah. There was bound to be some drunks so if one bumped into you, sorry to hear that.

[Is a little defeated looking when Roberto asks him that.]

Yeah, but she apparently had a date. She probably didn't want to betray the guy by dancing with others.

[ He feels a little bad lying to Jeremy... just a little. So when he sees the look on Jeremy's face, he snorts. ]

A date? That was me. We had a deal going just in case somebody asked us to dance. I suspect she stuck with it out of stubbornness more than anything. I don't think she would've minded dancing with you.

Huh? Why couldn't she have just said so? N-nah. It was my fault for not noticing.

Don't be so nice, how could you have noticed? We weren't even together most of the ball.

I thought it was strange, but I just accepted it without question. [Really doesn't want to admit how easily he can be tricked.] I really should have tried asking her again later in the evening..

How come you want to dance with her so badly?

...

Ok. A moronic friend of mine told me to dance with everybody at the ball. I don't like balls or dancing and he probably just wanted to see me squirm.

... I see.

[ He becomes less defensive in an instant. ]

Why did you agree to something like that?

Because he always thinks he's better than me psh he wishes and I wasn't gonna back down from his stupid little wager!

... That's ridiculous.

Do you really care what he thinks?

No. It's fun to rub it in his face when I win though. [You're talking to a 9 year old in a 29 year old's body, Roberto.]

[ He just... doesn't understand. He's still shooting Jeremy the same look. ]

And Minen calls you two men.

That's awfully generous of her to say. [Totally meaning Hervey, but tries to wean off that subject.]

I've been meaning to ask you how your instructing is going. Have you had a lot of business?

No. I suppose that's what I should have been doing all night. Advertising the dojo being open. [Doesn't look all that displeased at failing to do so though.]

That would've been a good idea.

[ He sighs, running a hand through his hair uselessly in an effort to smooth it out. ]

Maybe you could make some potch off that Euram guy. He sure could use a backbone, and he told me he's been somewhat trained with a rapier.

Right. That illustrious type who showed up recently? I did tell him about the dojo when I first met him, but I wasn't aware he actually had weapon training.

It surprised me, too. He did seem keen on running away from whatever he was talking about.

It would be easy money, though.

Hm. I wonder if I could convince him. He doesn't look like the type to like fighting...

Worth a try. Like I said, he seems to have no backbone. I'm sure you could convince him if you really wanted to.

[ Pause. ]

Have you seen a caped animal running around?

[Tilts his head.]

Wha? A caped animal?

[ He seems mildly embarrassed now, and doesn't want to admit he got attacked by it. ]

It was some sort of giant... rodent or creature. It had a cape.
